In the closing moments of Jesus' time on earth Matthew’s Gospel records a unique perspective. Jesus' death may have confused the disciples but his resurrection was a true game changer. The challenge here is, has the resurrection been a game changer in your life?
Jesus' teachings increase in intensity as the Gospel of Matthew begins to come to a close. He tells of the future, what we are to expect and what to do while we wait. World events remind us that He is coming and may this inspire us not to fear but to action because he is with us, not just with us but in us.
In the fourth discourse, as recorded by Matthew, Jesus responds to his disciples arguing about who would be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. He doesn’t just correct the thinking but encourages them (and us) to become great by becoming like a child and the importance of the children of the kingdom living together in unity.
Matthew records many parables of Jesus explaining or describing the Kingdom of Heaven. Many involve agriculture including the parable of the four soils. The message of the Kingdom of Heaven is heard by many, some receive it gladly, others struggle to hold on to it. How can we receive it and hold on to it and even better produce a harvest from it?
Jesus calls together the people that we know as the 12 disciples, He commissions them and immediately sends them out to announce the Kingdom of Heaven. We are not called and asked to take a seat but to share the Good News as it was shared with us with the lost sheep of this world.
